When I have Bildhuus and DXO Photolab 7 running at the same machine accessing the same folders with photos at some point Bildhuus freezes, sometimes even crashing the whole computer. This seems to be especially present when I export pictures with Photolab into one of the folders DXO is monitoring.
I already have sent a few automatically generated bug reports.
Steps to reproduce:
Have Bildhuus running in the background while editing Photos with Photolab 7. Export photos with Photolab back into your library. Bildhuus picks up that there are new Photos and starts to index them. Then at some point Bildhuus crashes.
I’ve looked into this and unfortunately couldn’t really find a direct explanation. What stood out was that the application uses a lot of memory (~19 GB) and it’s possible that this, combined with high memory use of other applications, could result in some sudden memory swapping by the OS, which can appear as the whole system hanging. I would recommend reducing the size of the in-memory thumbnail cache to maybe 2 GB (Settings → General → MEMORY USAGE) and see whether that resolves the issue.
Apart from this, there were a few crash reports where the crash happened deep inside Windows’ own code, with no visible connection to application code. Since this is the first time I’ve seen this occur, I’d lean towards assuming that this might be a system issue (for example a RAM related issue), but I’ll keep an eye on similar crashes to see whether a pattern emerges.
I would not be surprised if this is caused by Windows since I moved it from an Intel to an AMD laptop without doing a a fresh install. Still, Bildhuus is the only program that frequently crashes.
I also somehow suspect there is a connection to the “suspend to hibernate/sleep” function of Windows. Often when the laptops get into sleep/hibernate due to closed lid or low battery, and I wake it up, the program freezes and needs to be ended with the task manager. After this the program then always starts with a crash report.
