I’m trying to test out the beta, but for some reason when I try to create a library (on an external SSD with all of my photos), I receive an error that it could not be created.
"Error creating library
Creation of the new library has failed
/Volumes/…: Permission denied
Any idea how I can resolve this issue? The application has access to content on my removable drive when I’m browsing within the file browser, just not when creating a library.
Thanks for any help. Looking forward to trying this out.
We have tried to reproduce the error, but have failed so far. It was possible to generate an error by explicitly removing write-permissions for the folder where the library is intended to be created, but the message is different in that case.
What would be interesting to know is the “exact” directory to which the error applies (i.e. is it the root folder of the external drive, the library folder, or some path within the library folder). Any specific folder names outside of the library folder itself are not important, but if it applies to something within the library folder then the name would also be important to know.
Alternatively, you could send me the log file right after the error message occurs (via DM or to bugs@bildhuus.com). To do that, you’d have to open the “Terminal” app, enter open $TMPDIR and confirm with the enter key. A finder window should then open up, showing the system’s temporary folder contents. The file in question there is then “aspect-log.sdl”.
Okay, it looks like what is happening is that the root folder of the external drive is write protected for your user account. The way we could indeed reproduce the error message was by choosing an existing folder on the disk that contains photos and not changing the location of the library folder before starting the creation process.
In order to get around this, you need to either add write permissions to the root folder of the external drive, or create a sub folder that has write permissions and choose that as the library folder*. To grant write permissions, you can right-click the folder and choose “Get Info”. The permissions can then be managed at the bottom of the info dialog.
* After choosing the photo folder you will be on the summary page of the library creation dialog. Instead of “Create Library”, click on “Customize” and then on “Change location…” and then select an empty folder on the drive.
