After waking my computer after it has gone to sleep, Aspect says “Suspending… Applying file system changes to the library”. The spinner is spinning and the progress bar is around 80% but it never finishes and the progress bar never advances. The only way to close Aspect is to end the task from Task Manager.

I found two crash reports that look like they showed the same symptoms and where the application was then probably terminated by the user. In those cases, there was a “files deleted from file system” dialog box involved that was open before the system went to sleep. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to reproduce the issue like that – for me, the dialog stays visible after resuming from standby and dismissing it will continue the application as normal.
I wonder whether in your case there might also have been files that had been detected as removed outside of the application and whether this might be an issue where the dialog might just not be visible for some reason.
If this ever occurs again, can you test whether pressing Esc does anything for you?
Because of my workflow, I do sometimes have files that Aspect sees while its open and then I later move somewhere else so that could be possible. If this happens again, I’ll try to see if I can get the dialog box to show and/or if Esc gets Aspect unstuck.
If you have the chance (and haven’t already done so), can you send a full crash report through the crash report dialog after you did the force-quit? Alternatively, you could paste the last 100 or so lines of the log file (Open Terminal, type open %TMPDIR and press Enter, then open the file aspect-log.sdl in any text editor). It might be that this is caused by the edit variant detection becoming very slow when a large number of new photos gets detected at once, which I also suspect to be the cause of the slow initial scan of the photos folder (Laptop and NAS strategy - #10 by Soenke).
