Translation to french is not good at all and makes some features bearely understandable (duplicate search and supression for exemple). I hope it’s not IA made. If that’s the case please ask some real people to do the job.
We are aware that there are still some inconsistencies in the French (and Spanish), translations. Due to the number of translated strings (over 10,000 words in the application itself) and the number of new strings per release, there really is no better alternative to the hybrid approach we are using now.
Basically, the initial translation to French is done using AI by looking at the existing English and German translation, as well as at an additional glossary. This generally leads to an acceptable starting point.
Then, we manually go over the translation and correct a bunch of mistakes, until we find no more issues. Now, the problem with French is that, while I personally do know some basic French, I’m not familiar with the technical terms used in (photographic) software and it’s also not easy to find someone who is*.
The only solution for this right now is to manually look at other programs as a reference, but that is a tedious process and usually requires identifying a problematic term first. In the case of “suppression”/“supprimer” I was under the impression that this is the correct translation in the context of deleting files from disk. Even if this is just one example, can you clarify what the confusing part is in this case? We can then at least make a small concrete improvement there.
Also, if you have noticed any specific terms that are used inconsistently and can name a few, we can go through the translation again to look for places where they are misused and fix these.
* This is also true for the Spanish translation, where finding someone who is actually familiar with the terminology of photographic software has been our main issue. We had the initial Spanish translation done by a native Spanish translator, but the terms used were often just so inconsistent with other photographic software, that even after countless corrections we didn’t feel like we could release it. Being able to use AI to assist in finding possible issues/corrections actually was the missing step to get it up to an acceptable level.
