Version 1.0.0-preview.2 released!

Hey everyone,

a new version of Aspect has been released: 1.0.0-preview.2. You’ll find the download links at the bottom of this post. Simply install over the existing installation to upgrade. The following changes and additions are included:

New features

  • Added an “open file” menu entry to be able to open one or more files with the default application (#346)
  • Added a new search expression to the search bar to find missing files
    • To use it, type “missing” and choose the “STATUS|missing” suggestion
  • Custom window frames can now be forced to be disabled to allow manually working around Intel driver issues (#402)
  • Saved searches can now be deleted
  • Added Cmd+, as the default shortcut to open the settings dialog on macOS (archived forum topic)
  • Added a German translation for the installer

Enhancements

  • Reworked the library creation dialog
    • Library name and location are now on a separate page from the library structure configuration
    • Instead of two example trees, a single dynamically generated one is used
    • Custom structures for events or individual photos are now set up on the same page
    • Added a few more pre-defined organization schemes
  • Improved focus behavior and graphical representation throughout the application (#407, archived forum topic)
  • Show in explorer/finder now selects all chosen files in explorer/finder windows
  • Improved the Windows installer experience
    • Adds an option to launch the application after the installation
    • Adds desktop and quick launch icons
    • Improves the information displayed in the “add/remove features” control panel
  • The library list in the menu is now sorted alphabetically
  • Improved the display of shortened paths
    • Displays an icon in front of the path, if it originates from the user’s home folder
    • Uses drive letters instead of volume names on Windows
  • Semantic search expressions (e.g. ISO rating) are now matched case insensitively
  • The year of events is now shown in the search bar
  • Improved the wording of the import menu of the folder browser page
  • Improved text and dark icon visibility the local context bar
  • Improved the visibility of text in event headers
  • The pre-defined star-rating saved searches are now displayed with star-shaped icons instead of text

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the language of the menu bar on macOS (#408, archived forum topic)
  • Fixed saving of changed keywords in the metadata editor (archived forum topic)
  • Fixed display of some special characters in the shortcut editor
  • Fixed thumbnails disappearing after large images have been viewed at 100% zoom
    • Increases the default thumbnail RAM cache size from 0.5 GB to 1.5 GB
    • Existing installations with this problem need to manually increase the size through the settings dialog
  • Fixed the wrong item being selected after going back from details view to thumbnail view
  • Fixed the keyboard focus leaving the center pane after switching between thumbnail and details view
  • Fixed the search bar to properly display and find the favorites collection
  • Pinned collections are now properly removed from the pinned section upon deletion
  • Fixed the import modal sheets to actually be modal and get the keyboard focus (#280)
  • Zooming using the mouse wheel/two finger scrolling now only works if the ctrl/cmd key is pressed (#241)
  • Fixed duplicate files appearing if the same import is run twice in parallel
  • Fixed recursive auto-imports to not replicate the source folder structure within the library
  • Fixed an issue where the thumbnail cache size was too low after restart, if configured above 4GB
  • Fixed the appearance of section captions in the film strip (#417)
  • Fixed a crash happening when attempting to toggle the journal visibility of a file that is not in the library (#405, archived forum topic)
  • Fixed a logic error occurring when attempting to delete events that are stored outside of the library (“referenced”) (#400)
  • Fixed an issue where individual photo folders were recognized as events after an application crash
