Hey everyone,
a new version of Aspect has been released: 1.0.0-preview.4. You’ll find the download links at the bottom of this post. Simply install over the existing installation to upgrade. The following changes and additions are included:
New features
- Added proper support for external editing (#439, #440, #456, #458)
- When editing an image, a copy that can be overwritten by the editor is created automatically
- A new settings page is available to configure the external editors
- Editors marked as favorite are available as tool bar buttons in details view
- Common editors are auto-detected, others can be configured manually
- Removed the operating-system “open with” dialog
- Implemented “peeking” of related files (#460)
- Activated by clicking a thumbnail with the middle mouse button, with a force-click on macOS, or alternatively with Alt+click
- Allows to quickly view and navigate to variants of the same image, as well as images that were shot at a similar time
- The metadata pane now shows the owning event (or the photo stream) and collections that the selected image is in (#397)
- Added menu entries and shortcuts to change the image rating (#423, forum topic)
- Added a menu entry for displaying file roles on thumbnails (e.g. “RAW” or “edited”)
- Added the possibility to configure the library folder structure in the settings dialog (#432, #451)
- Added the possibility to change the RAW/JPEG preference in the settings dialog (#454)

Enhancements
- Improved scrollbar visibility
- Added more macOS specific keyboard shortcuts (cancel dialog, close window, minimize window) (#427, forum topic)
- Let the details view tool bar use up all available space
- Do not use a default button for the RAW/JPEG choice dialog
- Added logging of low-level application crashes for better error diagnosis during the beta phase
- Added an “in any/no collection” search expressions and more recognition patterns for the hidden items expression (#450)
- Added more patterns for recognizing date prefixes in folder names for the multi-folder event conversion page
- file.jpg.ext2 is now recognized as a sidecar to file.jpg, in addition to file.ext2
- Disallowing changing the workspace/like status of trash can items and remove workspace view
- Improved the layout of the auto import settings page
- The drive activity indicator now disappears with a delay, avoiding short bursts of flickering
- In workspace view, now also deletes associated files (sidecar files and RAW/JPEG) in addition to the selected files (#429)
- Paths on Windows are now displayed without the volume name (only the drive letter)
Bug fixes
- Fixed import sheets not being fully modal when launched through the menu (forum topic)
- Fixed an issue where search expression suggestions did not show up
- Fixed zoom state when switching images and fixed the state of the zoom button (#401)
- Fixed concurrent text edit update while the user is typing an event name in the multi-folder event conversion page (forum topic)
- Fixed argument order for folder import error message (forum topic)
- Fixed the caret in text fields disappearing in certain positions (#245)
- Avoids a possible crash for concurrent import/organize processes
- The event date in the import-as-event dialog is now computed correctly (#455)
- When creating a new event from selected images, any associated files (e.g. RAW/JPEG pairs) are now also added to the new event
- Fixed an issue with moving windows between different DPI monitors on macOS
- Fixed bad layout of the camera metadata field
- Fixed a black window on Intel HD 4xxx GPUs on Windows (#431)
- Fixed text fields always selecting the whole text when activating the window (#399)
- Fixed library suspension during system standby
- The photo stream page now refreshes when the journal state of an item changes
- Fixed handling of unset XMP sidecar fields
- Fixed menu open behavior and sticky Alt key on Windows
- Fixed performance issues when scrolling with small thumbnail sizes
- Fixed scroll position after changing views on high-DPI screens
- Fixed the paragraph header transition effect in the filmstrip
